Soft Tissue Grafting
Soft tissue grafting is a procedure that may be performed to restore the mouth’s soft tissues for functional or cosmetic purposes.
Functional soft tissue grafts
Soft tissue grafting can be used to reverse gum recession caused by periodontal disease, misaligned teeth or aggressive tooth brushing. When the gums recede, the roots of one or more teeth can become exposed. During a soft tissue grafting procedure your periodontist will repair the exposed root(s) with gum tissue from the roof of your mouth (palate) or from another donor source.
Soft tissue grafts help restore oral health by protecting the roots of the teeth from decay and by reducing the sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures that often accompanies gum recession.
Smile enhancing soft tissue grafts
Soft tissue grafting is sometimes performed to correct the overly long appearance that the teeth can take on when the gums recede. By repairing the exposed roots, soft tissue grafts can improve the appearance of the gum line, correcting the shape of the teeth and enhancing the smile.
