Why the Dentist Recommended Him Grafting?

Why the Dentist Recommended Him Grafting?Gum grafting is vital for stopping the advancement of gum recession and loss of bone mass. There are many reasons why gum grafting is important, making it the most commonly preferred treatment solution for patients suffering from tooth sensitivity, preventing tooth decay, and providing a more even gum line.

Gum recession results in exposing the tooth root and affects the aesthetics due to the distinction in pigmentation between the tooth's enamel and root. Since roots are softer compared to the tooth's enamel, then sensitivity is a major concern. The lack of sufficient gum tissue surrounding the root also makes it susceptible to decay.

If not addressed in advance, then theirs is a likelihood of the issue growing and resulting in tooth loss. Depending on the patient's condition, the dental professional can recommend one of the following types of gum graft.

Connective Tissue Graft

Out of all the types of gum graft procedures, this is the most recommended since it can correct several areas of recession. The dentist usually takes underlying connective tissue from a flap on the mouth's roof before stitching it around the exposed root. This procedure has a high rate of success since the flap grows and covers the exposed roots.

Free Gingival Graft

Patients who have fragile gum tissue are in dire need of reinforcement to prevent further degradation. The dentist acquires small tissue from the palate, then attaches it to the existing gum tissue around the exposed tooth root. In case the patient lacks sufficient tissue or needs more tissue, frozen-dried tissue is used.

Pedicle Graft

This gum grafting technique uses tissue next to the exposed roots, and only if it's healthy and thick—the dental professional extracts healthy tissue near the affected root before stitching it over into the right position. A dentist can recommend either of these grafting techniques, depending on the magnitude of the damage.
