Easy Ways to Spot Gum Disease at Home on Your Own

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Evan
Easy Ways to Spot Gum Disease at Home on Your OwnGum disease refers to an oral condition affecting your gums. It is commonly caused by harmful bacteria that are found in your mouth. As much as it is dangerous, gum disease can be prevented by simple measures like good oral hygiene, such as brushing at least twice a day and flossing regularly. However, it is important to get it treated as soon as possible if you develop gum disease. Treating gum disease early is very important because the chances of reversing the condition are very high. This is why it is important to know the signs of gum disease. Some of them include red and swollen gums, bad breath, and sensitive teeth.

Red and Swollen Gums

Red gums are one of the early signs of gum disease. In most cases, gum disease typically starts with inflammation along the gum line. This is why you will notice swellings around the gums. When you floss or brush your teeth, you will also notice slight bleeding. All these are signs of gum disease in its early stages.

Bad Breath

Naturally, your mouth is a nice and wet home for millions of bacteria. Bacteria mostly feed on the plaque, meaning that the more plaque you have, the more harmful bacteria are in your mouth. The harmful bacteria release toxins that irritate your teeth and gums and produce a foul smell. Therefore, when you notice an unusual bad breath, you might be having gum disease.

Sensitive Teeth

If taking hot or cold drinks makes your teeth uncomfortable, you could be having an underlying condition in the form of gum disease. Advanced gum disease could cause shrinking gums, exposing a larger part of teeth than normal. When that happens, the sensitive part of your tooth called the dentin is exposed. This is why you experience tooth sensitivity when you drink hot or cold drinks. Visit our offices if you have any symptoms of gum disease for professional care.
