How Milk Can Help Prevent Gum DiseaseAccording to research published by the American Journal of Periodontology, eating foods rich in calcium can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease. Milk is one of the best sources of calcium, containing over 56% of the nutrient. Calcium plays a crucial role in preventing gum disease by promoting strong bones and warding off osteoporosis. Besides, calcium strengthens the jawbone and gumline near your teeth, reducing the risk of gum disease. Therefore, consuming milk will significantly reduce the chances of getting gum disease.

How Milk Prevents Gum Infection

Gum disease is caused by bacteria that accumulate in the pockets between your gums and teeth. If the bacteria aren't removed, it will advance and destroy the bone that supports your teeth. However, if you drink milk, you will supply the jawbone with sufficient calcium. This makes it strong enough and able to withstand bacterial intrusion.

Milk contains other essential nutrients that help protect your gums. For example, it contains casein proteins that form a protective film around your gums. Besides, these proteins protect the outer layer of your teeth, preventing decay. The neutral PH levels of milk can also help neutralize sugary or acidic foods and beverages. These foods can damage your gums, weaken them, and make them vulnerable to conditions that cause gum disease. However, if you drink milk, you supply gums with calcium and phosphorus, nutrients that make them stronger and firmer. These minerals will help out the gums when acid from food tries to break them down.

Drinking milk is one way of preventing gum disease; however, you shouldn't depend on it alone. Be sure to consume a balanced diet and maintain high oral hygiene. You should also come in for regular oral checks and gum assessments. Visit our offices for more information on how milk helps prevent gum disease.
