Gum disease includes a wide spectrum of presentations, which can be from mild to severe. The degree of severity can oftentimes determine the symptoms that you may present. Taking into account that it is a pathology that can have serious complications, we recommend you not only act to prevent it, but take immediate action if you suspect that you may have developed gum disease.
Bleeding Gums Are a Red Flag
Physiologically, normal gums should neither hurt nor bleed. Therefore, if you present either of these two symptoms, you should suspect gum disease may be to blame. In addition, reddened gums are known as gingivitis, which means that you have an accumulation of inflammatory mediators and plaque. It is one of the first symptoms that usually appear in gum disease.
Bad Breath Is Another Symptom
The proliferation of pathogenic bacteria and the accumulation of food on the teeth produces halitosis, which is commonly known bad breath. Fortunately, if you start to develop halitosis, it is treatable.
Loose Teeth Can Also Occur
When gum disease is very advanced, the support system of the teeth loses stability. Your teeth may start to feel loose if your gums recede too much. Unfortunately, if you do not act fast, you may lose some teeth. Regular dental checkups with cleanings, however, can help prevent it from occurring.
Be Mindful of Retracted Gums
If you notice that your teeth look longer than usual, it can be a sign of advanced gum disease. Our body reacts to plaque by attacking the gum tissue. That means our gums are visually retracted, and our teeth are much more exposed.
