Oral maxillofacial surgery is a specialty in dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, through surgical and adjunctive procedures, of diseases, traumas, defects, and tumors affecting the functionality and aesthetic value of the complex and soft ligaments and tissues of the oral, maxilla, neck and head region. It is a surgical realm of dentistry.
The extensive scope of OMS
This field can be termed the bridge between medicine and dentistry. It has grown to encompass diagnosis and surgical treatment of the oral cavity, the head, and neck diseases. Surgical extractions of impacted wisdom teeth and complex dental implants are common reasons for referrals to an OMS. They also correct growth abnormalities, perform orthognathic procedures of the jaws and facial bone to restore function, reinstate facial euphony and treat sleep apnea. OMF surgeons are also extensively trained in administering anesthesia of all forms and removing tumors, both benign and malignant.
OMS also helps manage complex tumors to the head, face, and neck. Facial injuries or traumas that leave broken bones of the skull and face require the professional attention of an OMF surgeon. This realm also deals with correcting congenital abnormalities like the cleft lip and palate in children through primary and secondary surgery. This surgery includes cosmetic reconstructions, including facelifts, rhinoplasty, Botox, and eyelid surgeries. These procedures offer an aesthetic appeal as well as boost confidence. Pre-implant surgeries, cysts, tumor removal, and treatment of severe infections of the face and jaw, including tissue transfer, are also procedures offered by OMS.
The specialty includes treating head and neck cancers, precancerous and vascular lesions and tumors, neck anatomy, and orthognathic surgeries. Treatment of TMJ pain disorder is also an inclusion. OMF surgeons work alongside other surgeons and specialties in different fields of medicine to help achieve better results and provide a comprehensive perspective in some instances during treatment. |
