Are you worried about gum disease? If you are, it is completely understandable. Nearly half of all American adults have gum disease, and the incidence of gum disease rises to 75% after age 65. Gum disease has been linked to serious, chronic illnesses such as heart disease, dementia, and a worsening of diabetes. If you are worried about gum disease, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a bacterial infection. The bacteria that cause gum disease are always present in your mouth. They actually aid in digestion. However, when there are too many bacteria in your mouth, they can cause problems. Acids from the bacteria eat into your teeth and can cause tooth decay if you aren't brushing and flossing properly. Those same bacteria are also responsible for gum disease.
In gum disease, bacteria infect your gums. Over time, plaque and tartar buildup along your gumline, plus the bacteria, can cause your gums to recede from your teeth. Eventually, gum disease can lead to tooth loss.
What To Do
If you are worried about gum disease, there are several steps you can take to help your gums fight the disease. First, schedule a checkup with a dentist. A dentist will be able to tell if you have gum disease and what further steps need to be taken. Also, make sure you are brushing and flossing after every meal. You need to be sure that you are hydrated because a lot of bacteria is removed each day via saliva production. Limit your intake of sugars and carbohydrates because they encourage bacterial growth. The sooner you begin fighting gum disease, the less likely your teeth and gums will be severely impacted. That way, you can put those worries about gum disease aside.
