Can Scaling And Root Planing Save My Teeth?

Can Scaling And Root Planing Save My Teeth?People who have been diagnosed with gum disease may face tooth loss and loss of jawbone unless they begin to treat the disease. One of the ways dentists can stop periodontal (or gum) disease is to have their gums cleaned deeply, both above and below the gumline.

Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is one way to deep clean your gums. Here's some more information on scaling and root planing and how they can save your teeth and gums.

Why Is Gum Disease So Hard on Teeth?

Bacteria cause gum disease in millions of Americans every year. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch your gum disease in the early stages and cure it.

However, if your gum disease is in Stage Two or Stage Three, you will not be able to cure the disease, but you can treat it. Treating the disease is important if you want to save your teeth.

If you don't have your gum disease treated, you will begin to lose gum tissue. When you lose gum tissue, you're losing the anchor that holds your teeth in place, which means your teeth can fall out.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Deep gum cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, helps your gums to stay as healthy as possible. That's because scaling removes tartar, plaque and bacteria from your mouth, above and below the gumline.

Root planing is the name for what the dentist does after the deep cleaning is complete. The dentist will make sure your tooth roots have a solid anchor within your gums.

Both scaling and root planing are helpful for your teeth. They not only rid your teeth of bacteria and buildup, but they make sure your teeth are secure in your mouth.
