Deep cleaning and surgical intervention

In a healthy mouth the gingiva (gums) and bone fit snugly around the teeth.  As periodontal disease develops, pockets begin to form between the gums and the teeth.  As the pockets deepen, they can start to harbor bacteria that cannot be removed by normal at-home brushing and flossing.  Over time this bacteria can cause bone and tissue loss, and eventually the loss of one or more teeth.

A pocket-reduction procedure can help preserve the teeth.  During this procedure your periodontist will fold back the gum tissue in order to perform a deep and thorough cleaning that removes the bacteria that threaten the teeth.  He or she will then secure the gums back in place.

By removing disease-causing bacteria and reducing the depth of the pockets between the teeth and gums, a pocket reduction procedure helps to restore oral health.

Contact us today if you have any questions about pocket reduction procedures or to schedule an oral health consultation with Dr. Dehni. We’ll be happy to explain how this procedure can help maintain the health of your smile.
