Healthy teeth and gums are an important component of overall health.  In addition to allowing you to eat and speak with ease, a healthy, functional smile is attractive and enhances self confidence.

Tooth anatomy

A tooth consists of two main parts: the crown, or visible part of the tooth structure, and the roots, which lie below the gum line (gingiva).

The crown represents one-third of the tooth structure.  It is covered with a protective layer of enamel, the hardest substance in the body.  Just below the enamel lies dentin, a material that is similar to bone.  The root represents the remaining two-thirds of the tooth structure.  The central chamber of the tooth root is filled with pulp, soft tissue that is rich with blood vessels and nerves.  Finally, the gums are the soft tissues that surround the base of the teeth.

Healthy teeth and gums

Gums are an excellent indicator of oral health.  In a healthy mouth, the gums fit snugly against the teeth and are usually a uniform color (often a coral pink).  They are smooth and firm to the touch and will not bleed when brushed or probed.
